Love, Nature, and the Colors of the Rainbow: A Lighthearted Dive into LGBT and Evolutionary Quirks

Recently I came across a movie on this theme and a moving story in a book called “The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle” by Matt Cainon, illustrating ‘love’ between two boys, who are presently in their 50s. The protagonists in both the movie and the book set me thinking. The characters in both cases indicate that, one, ‘love’ is a matter of choice, and, two, that is how ‘these’ people seem to be made. Recorded history in terms of ancient texts, pre-historic paintings, temple arts also depict such behavior in humans in the past. There have been recorded instances of animals exhibiting similar behavior in real life. But, that seems to be more of an aberration than a norm. Going through both of these narratives however made me realize that this behaviour is real and not ‘imagined’ i.e. it is not that the characters indulge in such kind of behaviour due to lack of opportunity or any other external compulsion. It is something very basic and primordial, which, I did not use to believe as the case being earlier. Now, at least for me, the feelings and behavior seem quite natural. That someone feels attracted to a person of the same gender, and identifies him or her as the soulmate seems natural. It does not seem to be just a sexual aberattion, but, an instance of someone finding their alter ego in a person of the same gender.

While I personally don’t have issues either way it is a matter of choice, one likes what one likes. Someone likes red color and someone likes blue, someone likes broccoli someone does not, someone likes to party while someone prefers to be left alone. But, then all the latter do not go about celebrating and forcing their choices on other members of the society, as compared to the gay parades and prides that seems to be annual occurences in many countries in the world, nowadays. It is almost as they want to wear their choices on their sleeve. Of course, we have certain cultures, in various countries around the world where we indicate our marital status, coming of age, and other life event rituals that herald our choices or status to the people at large, but, more of that on some other time, the idea behind this blog is something else.

Nature has inexplicable and immutable ways of coming back at us humans. There have been studies which show that the proportion of male child born in countries, engaged in war, towards the end of war (where a high number of males is killed) is significantly higher as compared to the proportion of female children, and, no one knows how or why. How does nature know that a lot of males have been killed and gender balance needs to be restored. We all know that nature rewards certain behaviours, certain characteristics, certain genetic traits so that they are more likely to be propagated as compared to other non-dominant traits. If being a LGBT is OK and a natural thing, then nature should help in propagating the same and more and more people should be born with such traits. But, if people engaged in such behavior are not able to procreate then how does nature indicate if this is a dominant trait or a non-dominant one, how do such people propagate their genetic material?

Folks engaged in such behavior might speak in terms of equal treatment in the society or legality of same-sex marrriages etc., which is perfectly fine. But, when it comes to propagation of genetic material, then they have to adopt children from some other couple. If the number of such people keeps on increasing and ulimately all of us become LGBT then what is the future of mankind on earth? Natural attraction between genders is the nature’s way of indicating the right way forward, and any other behaviour invented by living-kind is certainly not the natural way. Whether one quotes religious texts or moral values for accepting or condoning a certain kind of behaviour, accepting them or debarring them from the society, the elephant is clearly in the china shop!

Looking forward to your reactions and comments on the same!!!

  1. Well articulated views I have some of my friends as Gay/ lesbian. They don't want to be categorised under the broader umbrella of LGBTQ and don't necessarily subscribe to the views of the Community of LGBTQ..... Also in an era of gender fluidity.where one' s orientation is determined by how it feels -if one feels like a female it will be a female and if it feels like a male it will be a male lots of confusion do arise on many practical application and legal interpretation. For example when one feels like a female for a few hours and like a male for few hours, - except where there are gender neutral toilets and urinals, which facility to use because a challenge.

    1. The idea is good and seems reasonable, but, are we in India physically and mentally prepared for this, where till some time back even talking about menstruation also used used to be a taboo...But things are changing fast and for the good....That is why there is hope...Inshallah!!!
